Get access to expert legal help when you or your family need it.

Legal Insurance Plan

You're more likely to need legal services than to be hospitalized. Yet, while most people have medical insurance, they have no safety net to handle legal events in their life. With MetLaw®, you can obtain services from attorneys in much the same way as you do from the doctors who participate in your medical plan.

MetLaw provides access to a network of participating attorneys for help with a wide range of legal issues, including:

  • Wills and Estate Planning
  • Family Law (Name Change, Adoption)
  • Consumer Protection (Auto Repair, Consumer Fraud)
  • Juvenile Court Matters (Includes Criminal Matters)
  • Debt and Identity Theft Matters (Bankruptcy, Tax Audits)
  • Home and Real Estate Matters (Purchase or Sale of a Home, Security Deposits)
  • And more!

As a new hire, you can enroll within 31 days of your benefits eligible date. Outside of your new hire enrollment period, enrollment is limited to the company's annual enrollment period. $6.93 biweekly, via payroll deduction, covers you, your spouse/domestic partner and dependents.

How it Works

How It works

  • We’ve teamed up with Mercer Voluntary Benefits and Hyatt Legal Plans, a MetLife company, to bring you this group legal plan.
  • The legal plan gives you and your family access to legal advice and professional representation at an affordable price, through a voluntary, after-tax payroll deduction. The legal plan provides access to a network of over 14,000 participating attorneys to provide help for covered legal matters.
  • Have you ever wished you had an attorney in the family?
  • Someone who could send a letter to an auto dealership and get them to fix your car right?
  • Someone who could call the credit card company so they’d erase a disputed charge on your account?
  • Someone who could review contracts related to a home purchase or sale?

Now you can get something even better with your legal insurance benefit. This benefit puts a team of attorneys on your side … ready whenever you need help on legal matters or financial issues. That means you can have an attorney draw up a Will. Have a lawyer defend you for a traffic matter. Even get a legal opinion on what to do about a neighbor’s fence that’s sitting on your property—and it’s all covered under your legal insurance benefit. Sound too good to be true? It’s not.

All Baystate and Baycare employees who work at least 16 hours/wk or BVNAH employees who work at least 15 hours/week.

As an eligible employee, you can enroll for coverage that you and your family can utilize.

You can enroll in this benefit during Baystate’s benefits open enrollment each Oct-Nov timeframe. If you are a new hire or have a “qualifying change in life status”, you can enroll within 15 days of your hire date.

You can cancel your coverage during a subsequent annual enrollment or mid-year if due to a qualified life event (marriage, loss of dependent, etc.). If one of these situations applies, contact Mercer at 855-290-5661 or select the Current Benefit Elections option at, log in, and decline the Legal benefit (leave others unchanged). The cancellation would become effective the first day of the month after the request and you would not be able to re-enroll until a subsequent annual enrollment. Your first or second paycheck after the cancellation is processed would reflect the change and a refund should be issued by Hyatt within 30 days of the date the cancellation is processed, if applicable.
The Member may continue coverage by electing the option of portability when the Member no longer qualifies as an eligible employee of the Policyholder or as a Member of the group to which the Plan is issued. The Member must apply for portability within 30 days of the Member’s last day of employment. Portability coverage will take effect, subject to payment of the initial premium, as of the date the Member's coverage under the group policy terminates.
The plan covers most personal legal services. The following matters are excluded from coverage:
  • Employment-related matters, including company or statutory benefits
  • Matters involving your employer, MetLife and affiliates, and plan attorneys
  • Matters in which there is a conflict of interest between the employee and spouse or dependents in which case services are excluded for the spouse and dependents
  • Appeals and class actions
  • Farm and business matters, including rental issues when the participant is the landlord
  • Patent, trademark and copyright matters
  • Costs and fines
  • Frivolous or unethical matters
  • Matters for which an attorney-client relationship exists prior to the participant becoming eligible for plan benefits

Note about pre-existing matters: Legal plan members are encouraged to use the plan to resolve as many legal issues as possible even if they are pre-existing matters. The only pre-existing matters which cannot be covered under this plan are those for which the participant has retained an attorney before becoming eligible for plan benefits. This policy is necessary to protect the existing attorney-client relationship.

Please refer to the plan certificate for additional details.

You'll have access to a nationwide network of more than 14,000 participating attorneys from which to choose. Network Attorneys have an average of 25 years or more of legal experience and have met stringent selection criteria. If you stay within the network, covered legal services are provided with no additional attorney fees. You also have the flexibility to use an out-of-network attorney and get reimbursed for covered services according to a set fee schedule.

Visit Hyatt Legal Plans to find a Network Attorney near you.

Attorneys' services for covered legal matters are fully paid for by the plan except for excluded matters. When services are rendered for covered matters, participants do not receive a bill for the Network Attorney and they do not complete a claim form. All billing and payments are handled directly between the Network Attorney and the plan. If you would like to find an attorney, call Hyatt Legal Plans at 1-800-821-6400 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, Eastern Time. A representative will assist you in finding an attorney and explain how to receive paid-in-full benefits.

If you are currently enrolled in the Hyatt plan, your coverage will automatically continue into 2018 unless requested otherwise. You will not have to re-enroll in the plan.
